Abstract:
The major concern of these lectures is translations of foreign literature in modern China and their influences in various aspects. Through the close reading of representative texts, we are going to explore how the Chinese translators respond to the political, literary, and emotional issues raised by the chaotic yet vigorous milieu of late 19th and early 20th century China. We will investigate the interaction between creative writings and translations, the appropriation of Chinese and Western literary traditions, and iconic figures who leave their marks on Chinese literature and popular culture.
