Abstract: 

Growing body of recently unearthed bamboo-strip manuscripts offers new perspectives on the nature of textual production and transmission in the Warring States Period (451-221 BCE). Through analysis and close reading of two selected Yi Zhou shu 逸周書 manuscripts from the collection of the Tsinghua University, the participants will be introduced to the methods of working with unearthed manuscripts and to a variety of problems pertaining to the relation of unearthed and received texts.

Requirements: solid command of Classical Chinese, familiarity with assigned readings (to be distributed closer to the workshop)

About the speaker: Edward L. Shaughnessy is the Lorraine J. and Herrlee G. Creel Distinguished Service Professor of Early China in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations of the University of Chicago. His main work is in the cultural and literary history of China’s Shang and Zhou periods with a focus on unearthed and received texts. Among his publications are Sources of Western Zhou History: Inscribed Bronze Vessels (1991), I Ching, The Classic of Changes; The First Translation of the Newly Discovered Second Century B.C. Manwangdui Manuscript (1996), Rewriting Early Chinese Texts (2006), Unearthing the Changes: Recently Discovered Manuscripts of and Relating to the Yi Jing (2014) and most recently a book in Chinese on Western scholarship on unearthed texts Xi guan Han ji: Xifang Hanxue chutu wenxian yanjiu gaiyao 西觀漢記:西方漢學出土文獻研究概要 (2018). He is the co-editor of The Cambridge History of Ancient China: From the Origins of Civilization to 221 B.C. (1999) and the editor of New Sources of Early Chinese History: An Introduction to the Reading of Inscriptions and Manuscripts (1997) and Imprints of Kinship: Studies of Recently Discovered Bronze Inscriptions from Ancient China (2017).
