Dear friends and colleagues,
after a long hiatus, I am finally inviting You to our round-table workshop. Please, feel free to send the invitation to whomever it may concern, be it Your colleague, or student. I am aware, that it is on rather short notice and in the case it would be difficult for the majority of the potential attendees, we will reschedule the workshop to spring 2025. As we discussed before, the goal of this is to get people to the table and work on different texts together and also a nice opportunity to see each other. More info here:

Round-table workshop
This workshop aims to bring PhD students and young scholars together to work and discuss different approaches, theories, and methodologies to studying ancient Chinese texts. Unlike more traditional workshops this one should be focused more on direct interaction over personal projects and ideas rather than inviting one person to lead a workshop related to their research.
The workshop will cover different topics, with a separate session dedicated to each one, presided by a “leader” chosen from among the participants. They will offer parts of their research related to a particular topic while other participants are expected to add their insight and contribute with their related research. Every topic should be broad enough to cover general principles and problems that all participants deal with, and there will be no restrictions regarding the time or disciplinary categorisation of sources. The only limitation is to stay within the scope of old/classical Chinese, but it could be a philosophical work, an encyclopedia, poetry, legal documents etc.
The workshop will be opened by a lecture on Old Chinese by Lukáš Zádrapa.
Where: Prague, Charles University
When: 18.- 20. October 2024
If you would like to attend, please send a short email to vaclav.valtr@email.cz containing:
– short academic bio
– motivation and expectations from the workshop
– whether you would like to attend as a leader of a particular block or rather just work on the texts presented by others
– which text would you like to bring to the table
The deadline for applications is on 20th August.
