Director Vanessa Hope submitted an official request to film with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. Not only did the office approve the request, but the crew soon managed to get so close to the first female president that they were able to make a film about her two terms in office. During the seven years of filming, Tsai managed to strengthen Taiwan’s independence and its relations with the US, and stood up to China. However, the film is not merely a portrait of the head of state. It tells a story of courage, hopes, and dreams, and by providing historical context, it offers a key to understanding the complex situation in a region where world peace is currently at stake. It captures Taiwan’s struggle for international recognition, which means nothing less than the right to the very existence of this island nation.
