Global Taiwan Chair

The Global Taiwan Chair was established at the Department of Sinology in 2025 to broaden the thematic scope of subjects and research conducted at the department and to provide a more diverse view of Sinophone cultures. The Global Taiwan Chair is financially supported through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of China (Taiwan).

The first holder of Global Taiwan Chair is Dr. Jacob Tischer who started in his position from January 1, 2025.

The Department of Sinology has been offering regular courses thematically related to the history and culture of Taiwan as a part of its accredited programme. The courses are taught by Dr. Jacob Tischer and by Dr. Táňa Dluhošová, a prominent scholar on these topics who presently works at the Oriental Institute.

In the winter semester of academic year 2025/26, the following courses will be a part of the curriculum:

State and Society in contemporary East Asia: case studies from Taiwan and China (syllabus)

Buddhism, Daoism and Polular Religion in Taiwan: From Local to Global and Back

Nation-Building in Contemporary Taiwan and its Historic Roots: Colonization, Globalization, Localization
