Public lecture by Prof. Steve Tsang (SOAS) “Taiwan in Xi Jinping’s Global Strategy for China”

Date: Thursday, March 26, 17:30-19:00

Place: Celetná 20, room 247

Under Xi Jinping China has made a basic change to how it approaches Taiwan, despite sustaining the rhetoric that this is all about national ‘reunification’.  The change lies in Xi having developed a global strategy for China, something no leader of the PRC had done previously, with the incorporation of Taiwan into China being a crucial part of this strategy. It is a strategy to make China great again or to fulfill the China Dream of national rejuvenation by 2050. A deadline for securing Taiwan has therefore been introduced de facto. In the talk, Steve Tsang will explain what this strategy is and how Taiwan fits into it, and what the implications are.

Professor Tsang is the director of SOAS China Institute. His recent publications include:

’The Stilwell Affair’, in Emily Hill (ed), Chiang Kai-shek’s Critical Years 1935-1950 (UBC Press, 2025)
